Gate valve is a freely hinged flap which drops to obstruct fluid, gas or liquid flow in one direction, but is pushed open by flow in the opposite direction. In an open valve, fluid flows in a direction from higher pressure to lower pressure. It is often wedge-shaped and can restrict water & fluids flow.The industries in which the majority of valves are used are oil and gas, power generation, mining, water reticulation, sewerage and chemical manufacturing.

When the valve is wide open, the gate is fully drawn up into the valve bonnet. Gate valves play a vital role in industrial applications ranging from transportation of drinking water to control of ignition in a rocket engine. Other applications of gate valve includes small valves fitted to washing machines, valves in car engines, gas control valves on cookers and safety devices fitted to hot water systems.
